The decision to end the popular TV show has apparently been years in the making. Ellen actually wanted to end the TV show after the 16th season but was convinced to sign on for three more years. The news follows negative backlash over the last year and views of ‘Ellen’ decreasing following allegations of bullying and a toxic workplace culture.
In an exclusive with The Hollywood Reporter, Ellen said “When you’re a creative person, you constantly need to be challenged — and as great as this show is, and as fun as it is, it’s just not a challenge anymore.” Ellen added, “When we did our 3,000th show, they showed that highlights montage and everybody was emotional. We all hugged and everyone had tears in their eyes, and Mike Darnell was here going, “You really want to [end this]?” Look, it’s going to be really hard on the last day, but I also know it’s time.”
Ellen made history as an openly gay woman presenting a day time television show, and for the most part, her 3000 episodes have brought joy to many households.
Ellen famously came out in on the front cover of Time magazine in 1997, stating “Yep, I’m gay.” Ellen married Portia de Rossi in 2008 after same-sex marriage became legal in California. According to an interview with ‘People’, their romance is very much still alive. Whenever Portia is travelling, Ellen “has the hotel put rose petals in the shape of a love heart on my bed… Every single time over the last 16 years. And it always catches me off-guard.”
